Spanish football legend Sergio Busquets has announced that he will retire from professional football at the conclusion of the current Major League Soccer (MLS) season.
Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano broke the news on Friday via social media, revealing that the Inter Miami midfielder will hang up his boots this October.
“Sergio Busquets RETIRES from professional football at the end of the MLS season!” Romano wrote.
“The decision has been made by the Spanish midfielder, who will leave Inter Miami and professional football in October. A true legend and icon of the game.”
Busquets, 36, is widely regarded as one of the most intelligent and composed midfielders of his generation, known for his tactical awareness and exceptional control of the game.
He confirmed the news himself with an emotional Instagram post, featuring a tribute video and the caption:
“A heartfelt thank you to everyone, and to football, for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story.”
Busquets’ illustrious career includes a decorated spell at FC Barcelona, where he won numerous La Liga titles and UEFA Champions League trophies.
He also played a pivotal role in Spain’s golden generation, helping La Roja win the 2010 FIFA World Cup as well as back-to-back UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
