Lagos postpones start of $3bn Marina-Lekki rail project to December 2025

The Lagos State Government has announced a new commencement date of December 2025 for the construction of its ambitious $3 billion Green Line rail project, shifting from its earlier target of starting before the end of 2024.

Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Commissioner for Transportation, disclosed the update via a statement posted on the state’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday.

Project Overview:

  • Route: The 70-kilometre Green Line will run from Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, covering 17 stations.
  • Key Areas Covered: Marina → Victoria Island → Lekki-Epe Expressway → Ajah → Sangotedo → Lekki Free Zone.
  • Construction Type: Combination of elevated and at-grade tracks.
  • Completion Timeline: Estimated 2 to 3 years, implemented in phases.

Phased Implementation:

  • Phase 1: From Lekki First Tollgate to Epe.
  • Phase 2: From Marina, including an on-water segment.

Osiyemi noted that feasibility studies and stakeholder consultations have been extensively conducted along the Lekki-Epe corridor in preparation for the project.
