Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams will lead the line for the Super Eagles in a decisive FIFA World Cup qualifying clash against Benin Republic, taking place today in Uyo.
The attacking duo impressed in Nigeria’s recent fixture against Lesotho, combining for the team’s second goal in a match that showcased their budding chemistry. Adams, who was making his debut, latched onto a well-timed pass from Osimhen shortly after being introduced in the second half. He weaved past Lesotho’s defenders before firing confidently into the net.
That impactful performance appears to have earned both strikers a starting role, with head coach Eric Chelle opting to pair them in a match that could define Nigeria’s World Cup hopes.
Captain William Troost-Ekong, who started the previous game, begins this one on the bench. In his absence, Wilfred Ndidi takes on captaincy duties and will anchor the midfield alongside Alex Iwobi.
Zaidu Sanusi returns to the starting XI and will line up in defence alongside Benjamin Fredrick, Calvin Bassey, and Semi Ajayi.
On the flanks, Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon will provide attacking width as Nigeria look to stretch the Benin defence.
The Super Eagles are under pressure to secure all three points if they are to remain in contention for a spot at next year’s World Cup. Even with a win, Nigeria will be hoping South Africa drops points against Rwanda to keep their automatic qualification hopes alive.
