The attention of the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has been drawn to a false and misleading report by an online platform, which falsely suggests that the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary parade was linked to an alleged attempted military coup. The report also made unsubstantiated claims referencing a recent DHQ press release announcing the arrest of sixteen military officers currently under investigation for professional misconduct.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) categorically refutes these claims. They are entirely false, malicious, and deliberately crafted to incite tension and undermine public trust. The decision to cancel the anniversary parade was made to allow Mr. President to attend a high-level bilateral engagement abroad and to enable the Armed Forces to maintain momentum in ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
The DHQ further clarifies that the ongoing investigation involving the sixteen officers is a routine internal disciplinary process aimed at upholding professionalism and accountability within the military. A duly constituted investigative panel is handling the matter, and its findings will be made public upon conclusion.
The DHQ urges all patriotic and peace-loving Nigerians to continue supporting the nation’s security agencies. The Federal Government, National Assembly, and Judiciary remain united in their commitment to safeguarding national security, promoting development, and preserving democratic governance. Democracy is here to stay.
Members of the public are advised to disregard the misinformation being circulated by individuals and groups intent on destabilising the country. The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains steadfastly loyal to the Constitution and to the democratically elected government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
