Renowned music Icon Akin Shuga dies in Canada

The Nigerian entertainment world is in mourning following the death of celebrated band leader, music icon, and philanthropist Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akin Shuga. According to a family statement, the distinguished musician and Managing Director of Shuga Entertainment and Shuga Limb Foundation passed away in New Brunswick, Canada, after a brief illness.

“It is with profound sorrow and full acceptance of God’s will that the family of Akinloye Tofowomo (Akin Shuga) announces his passing,” the statement read. “As we come to terms with this immeasurable loss, we humbly request privacy and quiet reflection during this difficult time.”

Akin Shuga was more than just a performer — he embodied resilience, excellence, and passion. For over thirty years, he dominated Nigeria’s live music scene, adding colour and vibrancy to countless high-profile events, weddings, and corporate functions. His unique style — combining sophistication, energy, and showmanship — made Shuga Band one of West Africa’s most sought-after live bands.

A LIFE OF MUSIC, COURAGE, AND IMPACT

Born Akinloye Tofowomo in Lagos, he began his musical journey in the early 1990s. Despite living with poliomyelitis, he rose to become one of Nigeria’s most admired entertainers.

In 1998, he founded Shuga Band, which quickly grew into a leading entertainment group, performing for presidents, governors, and dignitaries across Nigeria and beyond. His ability to fuse genres — from juju to pop, highlife to soul — allowed him to connect generations of music lovers.

Beyond the stage, Akin Shuga was a passionate philanthropist. Through the Shuga Limb Foundation, he championed disability inclusion and empowerment, using his personal journey to inspire others to overcome physical challenges. In 2019, he released the hit single “I Can Walk”, a deeply moving anthem of hope that became a source of encouragement for persons with disabilities across Nigeria.

TRIBUTES AND LEGACY

Tributes have poured in from colleagues, fans, and industry peers, many describing him as “a man of melody and courage.” One close associate remembered him as “a bandleader with a heart bigger than his music — always giving, always smiling.”

Akin Shuga is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother. The family has stated that funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.

His passing marks the end of an era, but his music, optimism, and advocacy will continue to resonate through every performance his band delivers and every life he touched.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
