The House of Representatives descended into a rowdy session on Tuesday following a motion on the alleged illegal allocation of federal government lands at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex.
The motion, sponsored by Hon. Ademorin Kuye, sought to mandate an ad hoc committee to investigate the alleged land irregularities. However, several lawmakers opposed the proposal, insisting that the matter should be handled by the Standing Committee on Commerce, which already has oversight jurisdiction.
After a voice vote, the Deputy Speaker, who presided over the session, ruled against the motion—prompting further uproar among members.
Tensions escalated as lawmakers began protesting the non-payment of indigenous contractors, with many refusing to consider any new motions until the contractors are paid. Repeated attempts by the presiding officer to restore order proved unsuccessful.
The House later went into an executive session to address the impasse and subsequently adjourned till next Tuesday, to allow time for the executive to resolve the payment issue and continue deliberations on the 2024 budget.
