Appeal Court upholds ruling barring VIO from stopping or impounding vehicles

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld a 4 October 2024 ruling of the Federal High Court that prohibits the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (VIO) from stopping vehicles, impounding or confiscating them, and issuing fines to motorists.

Delivering judgment on Thursday, a three-member panel of the appellate court dismissed all three issues raised by the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, ruling entirely against the appellant.

Justice Oyejoju Oyebiola Oyewumi, who wrote the lead judgment, described the appeal as lacking merit. The court also ordered the VIO to pay N1 million in costs to the respondent, rights advocate and public interest lawyer Abubakar Marshal.
