Shettima Arrives in Abidjan for President Ouattara’s Inauguration

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, ahead of the inauguration of President Alassane Ouattara, who secured a fourth term in office following the country’s October 2 presidential election.

The 83-year-old Ouattara was declared winner with 89.77 percent of the votes and will be sworn in on December 8 at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan. Shettima is attending the ceremony on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by Shettima’s spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President was received on arrival by Côte d’Ivoire’s Prime Minister, Robert Mambe; the Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy, Mrs. Item Akpama; and other senior Ivorian government officials.

Nkwocha said Shettima will join several African leaders and international dignitaries at Monday’s inauguration.

Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Democratic Governance

The statement noted that Nigeria has consistently demonstrated its commitment to supporting neighbouring West African nations and upholding constitutional governance across the region.

“At this inauguration, VP Shettima will again reaffirm Nigeria’s dedication to promoting democratic values, respecting the will of the people, and ensuring that constitutional processes remain the foundation of leadership transitions across the region,” the statement read.

Strong Bilateral Ties

Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire maintain close cooperation through ECOWAS and the African Union, collaborating on areas including security, trade, and development. Their partnership is further strengthened by a Bi-National Commission and multiple agreements covering joint efforts against human trafficking, agricultural development, and expansion of the digital economy.

A large Nigerian community residing in Côte d’Ivoire has also deepened commercial, cultural, and social ties between both countries.

Vice President Shettima is expected to return to Abuja after the conclusion of the inauguration ceremony.
