Army Chief orders completion of barracks housing projects to boost troops’ welfare

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has directed the immediate completion of all ongoing residential accommodation projects in Nigerian Army barracks nationwide.

Shaibu issued the directive on Thursday while speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference in Abuja.

He said the welfare of troops, particularly access to decent housing, remains a top priority of his administration, stressing that his leadership would build on the efforts of previous army chiefs to address persistent accommodation shortages.

“In line with our welfare commitments to all Nigerian Army personnel, I will continue to build on the efforts of past Chiefs of Army Staff in addressing the crisis of accommodation shortages,” Shaibu said.

The army chief announced that all ongoing housing projects would be completed and allocated promptly, while new residential developments would be initiated across army divisions and barracks nationwide. He also disclosed plans for extensive renovation of existing facilities as an interim measure to improve living conditions.

While acknowledging that some progress has been made, Shaibu noted that significant gaps remain and would require sustained intervention to close.

He further stated that the Nigerian Army would continue to prioritise post-service housing to ensure dignity and stability for officers and soldiers after retirement.

Shaibu also revealed plans to visit Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday to commission the Affordable Home Ownership Option (AHOO) project for soldiers, as well as the Post-Service Housing Development Limited shopping complex.

He expressed confidence that the ongoing housing initiatives would significantly ease accommodation challenges for both serving and retired personnel, and commended the Chief of Logistics (Army) and other commanders for their contributions to the projects.
