Emergency responders are still battling to fully extinguish a fire that broke out at the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, more than 10 hours after the inferno began.
Flames and thick smoke can still be seen billowing from parts of the building, visible from a considerable distance, as residents and business owners in the area begin to assess the scale of the destruction.
The prolonged blaze has left many people in the vicinity unable to sleep, with anxiety gripping the neighbourhood. At least four surrounding buildings, including a church and a mosque, have reportedly been affected by the fire.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has urged residents to remain calm and stay away from the affected area, warning that the situation remains hazardous as firefighting and recovery efforts continue.
Emergency teams are still on ground working to bring the situation under control, while investigations into the cause of the fire are expected to commence once the area is declared safe.
