England to face Spain in Women’s Euros final

England are set to face Spain in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final on Sunday, in a highly anticipated rematch of the 2023 Women’s World Cup final.

Spain secured their place in the final with a narrow 1-0 victory over Germany, thanks to a 23rd-minute extra-time strike from Aitana Bonmati. The midfielder surprised many by firing a shot from a tight angle, appearing to set up a cross before finding the back of the net.

While Spain enter the final as reigning world champions, this marks their first-ever appearance in a Women’s European Championship final. Their semi-final win also ends Germany’s long-standing dominance in the tournament; it’s the first time they’ve failed to reach the final since 1997 and only the fifth time they’ve failed to score in 51 Euros matches.

England, the defending Euro champions, will meet Spain at St Jakob-Park in Basel at 6 pm local time (5 pm UK time) on Sunday. The last time these two sides clashed in a major final was in Sydney during the 2023 World Cup, where Spain emerged victorious with a 1-0 win.

The Lionesses have endured a challenging route to the final. After a 2-1 loss to France in their opening group match, they bounced back with strong performances against the Netherlands and Wales to advance. They edged out Sweden in a tense penalty shootout in the quarter-finals, then overcame Italy in extra time in the semi-finals on Tuesday to book their spot in the final.
