World Bank Set to Approve $250m Health Loan for Nigeria in September

The World Bank is expected to approve a $250 million loan to Nigeria next month as part of the third phase of its Health Security Programme for Western and Central Africa, aimed at addressing the country’s deepening health and economic crises.

A project appraisal document from the global financial institution indicates that the loan, slated for board approval on September 23, 2025, will support efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to health emergencies through improved systems and regional cooperation.

The World Bank noted that the main objective of the loan is to “increase regional collaboration and health system capacities to prevent, detect, and respond to health emergencies in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

To be disbursed as an International Development Association (IDA) credit, the funding will be overseen by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). At the same time, the Federal Ministry of Finance will serve as the official borrower.
