EFCC probes passenger over alleged undeclared $59,000 at Lagos Airport

The Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into one Duru Ikechukwu Damian, who was apprehended by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for allegedly failing to declare $59,000 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

This development was announced on Wednesday via the EFCC’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.

According to the Commission, Damian was stopped by customs officers on Monday during a routine inspection at the Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Currency Declaration Desk. He was en route to Dubai via Emirates Airline.

It was reported that Damian initially declared only $10,000, but a subsequent search uncovered an additional $49,000, bringing the total to $59,000.

At the official handover to the EFCC on Tuesday, the Area Comptroller of the NCS at the airport, E. I. Harrison, stated that the action was part of ongoing efforts to enforce currency declaration regulations.
