Since the early hours of Saturday, tensions have risen in Iperu, Ogun State, as police arrested the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abayomi Tella, alongside another PDP member and two INEC officials. They were allegedly found with large sums of cash, reportedly intended for vote buying in the ongoing Remo Federal Constituency by-election.
According to police sources, the suspects have provided “useful information” regarding an alleged plot to bribe electoral officers and influence the outcome of the election.
In response, the Ogun PDP strongly condemned the arrest, claiming Tella was picked up from his hotel in what they describe as a politically motivated attempt to weaken the opposition and give the ruling APC an upper hand in the polls.
