NEMA confirms 41 rescued, 4 dead in Sokoto boat mishap

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) announced on Friday that the joint response team has confirmed the rescue of 41 people and the recovery of four bodies following the recent boat accident in Goronyo, Sokoto State.

In a statement signed by the agency’s Head of Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, NEMA noted that the death toll rose after an additional body was recovered earlier on Friday.

A funeral prayer was held in accordance with Islamic rites, and the deceased was promptly buried.

As part of the rescue efforts carried out on Thursday, August 21, 2025, the response team visited four affected villages — Takuske, Kwakwazu, Bari, and Gamiha — where many of the boat passengers were from. These visits helped verify the number of individuals still missing and allowed the team to express condolences to grieving families. It was also confirmed during the visits that 16 people had survived the incident.
