French President Emmanuel Macron has named Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu as the new Prime Minister, following the resignation of François Bayrou amid mounting political tensions.
Lecornu, 39, a close ally of Macron, becomes the seventh premier under Macron’s leadership. His appointment signals the President’s choice to stay within trusted ranks rather than seek broader political consensus.
Lecornu has been tasked with engaging parliament to secure a national budget and broker key political agreements in the coming months. The formal handover is scheduled for Wednesday at noon.
