Colombian presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe has died, two months after being shot at a campaign rally in Bogotá. His family confirmed his passing on Monday, marking a tragic turn in the nation’s political landscape.
Uribe, a 39-year-old conservative senator and grandson of former President Julio Cesar Turbay (1978–1982), was shot in the head and leg on June 7 by a suspected 15-year-old gunman during a public event. Though he had shown signs of recovery, a fresh brain hemorrhage over the weekend proved fatal.
His widow, Maria Claudia Tarazona, paid tribute to his medical team and decried the violence that tore her family apart. Uribe’s body now lies in state at Congress in Bogotá for public viewing until Wednesday.
Authorities have arrested six people in connection with the assassination, including the alleged shooter. Police also apprehended the suspected mastermind, Elder Jose Arteaga Hernandez, aka “El Costeño,” and believe a dissident faction of the defunct FARC guerrilla group may have orchestrated the attack.
