Senate swears in two new Senators from Edo, Anambra

The Senate on Wednesday officially swore in Joseph Ikpea (Edo Central) and Emmanuel Nwachukwu (Anambra South) as senators following their victories in recent by-elections.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio presided over the brief ceremony, while Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Ojo, administered the oaths of office and allegiance.

The by-elections filled seats vacated by Monday Okpebholo, now Edo State Governor, and the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who died in July 2024.

The Senate temporarily relaxed its rules to allow family members and dignitaries into the chamber for the occasion. Notable guests included James Ibori, former Delta State Governor, and Philip Shuaibu, ex-Edo Deputy Governor.

Akpabio welcomed the new lawmakers and urged them to uphold the Senate’s standing rules. Their swearing-in restores the Red Chamber to its full 109-member composition.
