Players and officials of the Super Eagles have reportedly refused to travel to Marrakech ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final encounter with Algeria, over unpaid match bonuses.
The development was disclosed on X (formerly Twitter) by BBC Africa journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, who is currently covering the tournament in Morocco.
Nigeria, one of the standout teams at the ongoing AFCON 2025, is scheduled to face Algeria on Saturday evening. The Super Eagles have enjoyed a flawless run so far, winning all four matches and scoring the highest number of goals in the competition.
However, it is understood that bonuses for the four matches already played at the tournament are yet to be paid. The Eric Chelle-led side defeated Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda in the group stage before recording an emphatic 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16.
Sources indicate that in protest over the unresolved payments, the players and members of the technical crew have suspended all travel and training activities.
This is the second time in three months that the Super Eagles have taken such action over unpaid entitlements. In November 2025, the team staged a similar protest ahead of a crucial World Cup qualifying playoff against Gabon, although that issue was resolved within 24 hours.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) nor tournament organisers have issued an official statement on the development.
