INEC has commenced preparations for the 2027 general elections, officially opening the window for political party primaries across the country.
According to Naija News, the commission has announced a 38-day period for parties to conduct their primaries and nominate candidates for all elective positions, in line with the Electoral Act and its revised election timetable.
Beginning April 23, 2026, political parties are expected to conclude primaries for presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State House of Assembly elections within the stipulated timeframe, and also resolve any disputes arising from the process.
INEC has also directed parties to submit updated membership registers at least 21 days before their primaries, with a final deadline of May 10, 2026.
The commission had earlier released a revised election schedule, fixing the presidential and governorship elections for January 16, 2027, while State House of Assembly elections and additional governorship polls are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
INEC stated that the changes followed the signing of the Electoral Act 2026 into law by President Bola Tinubu, requiring a review of previously announced dates and activities.
