The ancient city of Akure came alive on Monday as political leaders, traditional rulers, and dignitaries from across Nigeria gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of elder statesman and leader of Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, described Pa Fasoranti as a moral compass and a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and principled leadership.
According to the president, the elder statesman belongs to a generation that actively shaped Nigeria’s history through commitment to justice, unity, and public service.
Tinubu praised Fasoranti for consistently standing with the vulnerable and marginalized, noting that he has always chosen principle over convenience and service over silence throughout his public life.
The president also highlighted the centenarian’s contributions to democracy, education, and nation-building, praying for continued good health and a lasting legacy.
Speaking at the event, Lucky Aiyedatiwa described Pa Fasoranti as a towering moral authority whose century-long life reflects integrity, discipline, courage, and selfless service.
Aiyedatiwa said the celebration was not just about longevity but a recognition of a life deeply connected to Nigeria’s political and moral history.
Former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko also paid glowing tribute to Fasoranti, describing him as a symbol of dignity, humility, resilience, and principled leadership.
He noted that the elder statesman personally insisted the celebration be held modestly within his residence, reflecting his humble nature despite his national stature.
Other notable dignitaries at the event included Dapo Abiodun, Kayode Fayemi, Iyiola Omisore, and Sehinde Arogbofa.
Traditional rulers in attendance included Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, represented by Olori Aderonke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, Ajibade Ogunoye, Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, and Victor Kiladejo.
The celebration drew lawmakers, government officials, community leaders, and well-wishers who gathered to honour Pa Fasoranti’s enduring contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and Yoruba leadership.
