Norwegian debutants Bodø/Glimt produced one of the biggest upsets in Champions League history, defeating Premier League champions Manchester City 3–1 in freezing Arctic Circle conditions. The match, played on an artificial surface in -9°C, left Pep Guardiola’s youthful side visibly out of their depth following their recent derby defeat to Manchester United.
Glimt deservedly took the lead in the 22nd minute when Ole Didrik Blomberg’s looping cross found Kasper Høgh, who headed home at the back post. Two minutes later, defensive lapses from City’s Max Alleyne allowed Blomberg to provide another assist, and Høgh converted a first-time finish to double the lead. Høgh came close to a third before halftime, only for Gianluigi Donnarumma to make a crucial save on the line.
Erling Haaland, usually prolific, was unable to find the target from close range, reflecting his recent struggle for form. The second half saw Jens Petter Hauge score a sensational solo goal, curling into the top corner and putting Glimt firmly in control. Rayan Cherki briefly pulled one back for City, but their hopes evaporated when Rodri was sent off for two bookable offences, reducing the visitors to ten men.
The result leaves Manchester City needing a win against Galatasaray in their final group-stage game to secure a top-eight spot, while Bodø/Glimt keep their hopes alive of reaching the knockout play-offs.
