Fallen Container Grounds Motorists on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Motorists traveling from Lagos to Ogun State via the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were left stranded for hours on Thursday due to a multi-vehicle collision on the Kara section of the road.

The first incident occurred around 10:50 am on the Kara Bridge, while the second took place at 2:00 pm on the Long Bridge, both along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The crash on Kara Bridge resulted in a container falling and blocking traffic, leaving drivers stuck for an extended period.

The traffic jam began at the Alausa Secretariat and stretched to Kara Bridge, completely halting vehicles headed towards Ogun State.

Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, confirmed the situation when contacted. She stated that officers were actively managing the scene and that no casualties had been reported. She also mentioned that first responders from Lagos State were quick to assist those involved.

“The Lagos Command handled the rescue operation at Kara Bridge, so I cannot speak on that. However, the traffic congestion was caused by two accidents, including a fallen container on Kara Bridge. Our officers are on-site working to clear it,” Okpe said.

She also mentioned another accident on the Long Bridge but confirmed that no lives were lost in either incident. “Our officers are managing the traffic as we speak,” she added.

Commercial bus driver Murtala Olarewaju, who was caught in the traffic, expressed frustration at the lengthy delay and blamed reckless driving for the congestion.

“I reached Berger Bus Stop around 1:30 p.m. after leaving the Secretariat at noon. I was stuck for nearly 30 minutes without moving, so I had to take an alternative route,” he explained. “Some impatient drivers have already started using the wrong side of the road. If this continues, both sides of the expressway will soon be completely blocked,” he warned.

Commuter Tolu also shared her frustration, noting the expressway’s frequent accidents and severe traffic jams.

“I’m not sure what caused this traffic, but some people say a container fell after an accident,” she said. “This road is always like this—accidents and gridlock. We’ve been stuck here since 2:15 p.m.”

Past reports have highlighted ongoing road maintenance, frequent accidents, and rainfall as major factors contributing to traffic congestion on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Motorists are calling for greater enforcement of road regulations by traffic control agencies to prevent such delays in the future.
