ABUJA — The National Democratic Congress has confirmed that its presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections has been zoned to Nigeria’s southern region.
The disclosure was made by Buba Galadima during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he outlined the party’s preparations ahead of the election cycle.
According to Galadima, the party is set to submit its membership register to the Independent National Electoral Commission as part of the formal requirements for participation in the elections.
“We have zoned the party’s presidential candidature to the South. Once we submit our register, we are good to go,” he stated.
He added that the party is prioritising transparent primaries over consensus arrangements, stressing that candidate selection will be determined through a competitive process.
The development comes on the heels of the entry of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso into the NDC, following their exit from the African Democratic Congress amid internal disagreements.
Obi had earlier advocated for zoning as a key factor in maintaining trust and balance within political coalitions, warning that failure to address power rotation could undermine unity among stakeholders.
The zoning decision is expected to shape the party’s strategy and influence political alignments as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
