No fewer than 90 serving senators, nine governors, and one deputy governor are reportedly battling intense political hurdles in their bid to secure seats in the 11th Senate ahead of the 2027 elections.
The aspirants, mostly from the All Progressives Congress (APC), have already appeared before the party’s screening committee in Abuja, with many expected to face direct primaries after stakeholders rejected consensus arrangements in several states.
Among governors seeking senatorial seats are Dapo Abiodun, Hope Uzodinma, Bala Mohammed, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, and Mai Mala Buni, while Ogun Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele is also in the race.
The report also revealed growing tension within the APC over Governor Hope Uzodinma’s alleged ambition to combine his governorship position with a senatorial bid and possible Senate Presidency aspiration.
Meanwhile, there are indications that Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas may retain their leadership positions if re-elected in 2027.
