Teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on Monday suspended classroom activities and staged a peaceful protest over the recent abduction of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area, an incident that reportedly led to the killing of one teacher.
The protesting teachers marched to the TESCOM office carrying placards with different inscriptions, calling on government authorities and security agencies to intensify efforts toward rescuing the remaining abducted victims and improving security across schools in the state.
The protest follows growing concerns among education stakeholders and residents after the abduction incident, which has heightened fears over the safety of teachers and students in vulnerable communities.
Speaking after a security meeting on Sunday, Seyi Makinde confirmed that seven teachers and an unspecified number of pupils were abducted during the attack.
The governor also disclosed that one of the abducted teachers, believed to be a Mathematics teacher, was killed by the abductors.
Makinde assured residents that the government and security agencies are working tirelessly to rescue the remaining victims, adding that joint operations involving the military, police, local hunters, and the Amotekun Corps are ongoing.
He further revealed that some operatives involved in the rescue mission sustained injuries after encountering improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by the kidnappers, but noted that they are responding positively to treatment.
The governor appealed for calm among residents while reiterating the state government’s commitment to strengthening security and ensuring the safe return of the abducted victims.
