Foreign ministers from the expanded BRICS bloc gathered in New Delhi on Thursday, with global energy security and the ongoing Iran conflict dominating discussions.
The meeting, hosted by India as BRICS chair, brought together top diplomats from member countries including Abbas Araghchi, Sergei Lavrov, and India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
India warned of rising global instability, citing “considerable flux” in international relations driven by conflict, economic uncertainty, and disruptions in trade and energy markets.
The Iran war and its impact on oil supply chains, particularly through key routes like the Strait of Hormuz, have heightened volatility in global oil and gas prices, placing additional pressure on energy-importing economies such as India.
Jaishankar noted that emerging markets are increasingly looking to BRICS to play a stabilising role amid growing global tensions, especially in energy, food security, and access to finance.
The expanded BRICS grouping also includes countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Ethiopia, reflecting its growing geopolitical influence.
