The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld a Federal High Court ruling restraining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its November 15–16 national convention in Ibadan without allowing former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido to participate as a chairmanship candidate.
A three-member panel unanimously held that PDP’s convention, conducted in defiance of a valid court order, was contemptuous and showed disrespect for judicial authority. The court emphasized that no party can decide which court order to obey and that PDP should have sought a stay of execution or filed an appeal before proceeding.
Key outcomes:
- PDP’s appeal dismissed for lacking merit
- ₦2 million awarded in costs against the party
- Court affirmed that the Federal High Court acted correctly in granting Lamido’s reliefs
