President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, following the resignation of Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who stepped down ahead of his expected political ambition toward the 2027 elections.
The President also nominated Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, subject to Senate confirmation.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the appointments are aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement and aligning foreign policy with the administration’s economic priorities.
The statement explained that the reshuffle is part of ongoing reforms to reposition the country’s foreign policy framework for improved efficiency, stronger global partnerships, and more strategic international engagement.
Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu, a seasoned diplomat and former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, is expected to lead Nigeria’s external relations at a time when the government is focusing on economic diplomacy, regional stability, and expanded international cooperation.
The presidency noted her extensive experience in international affairs, stating that she brings decades of diplomatic service and a strong understanding of Nigeria’s global relations.
Similarly, Ambassador Enikanolaiye, a career diplomat and former Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations, has served in several global missions including Addis Ababa, London, Ottawa, Belgrade, and New Delhi.
His nomination, according to the statement, is intended to ensure continuity and strengthen Nigeria’s foreign service capacity.
President Tinubu congratulated both appointees and urged them to prioritize national interest, deepen economic diplomacy, and improve the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora.
