Britain’s monarch, King Charles III, has called for stronger unity among Western allies during a rare address to the United States Congress in Washington, D.C.
Speaking amid rising global tensions, particularly over Ukraine and Iran, Charles emphasized the need for collective action, noting that “the challenges we face are too great for any one nation to bear alone.”
The King’s speech comes during a state visit hosted by Donald Trump, who welcomed the monarch and Queen Camilla to the White House, describing the United Kingdom as America’s closest ally.
Despite underlying tensions between Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Charles struck a diplomatic tone, highlighting the enduring “special relationship” between both nations—one rooted in shared democratic values and long-standing cooperation.
He stressed the importance of NATO and called for “unyielding resolve” in supporting Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia, which began in 2022.
The monarch also underscored the principle of checks and balances in governance, referencing the historic Magna Cartaand its influence on American law.
The address marks the first time a British monarch has spoken before Congress since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.
The visit, blending ceremony with diplomacy, concludes with a state dinner at the White House.
