The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has condemned the rising attacks on train operations along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor by suspected vandals and criminal elements, calling for stronger community involvement to safeguard railway infrastructure.
The latest incident reportedly occurred at Kilometer 177 on the Abuja–Kaduna route, where unidentified individuals allegedly gathered along the tracks and threw stones at a moving train, damaging the windscreen of the leading locomotive.
According to the NRC, similar attacks have been recorded in recent weeks at locations including Gidan Busa/Sarki Gora Village and Kakau District in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The corporation noted that these repeated incidents pose serious risks to passengers, railway personnel, and the overall safety of operations.
The agency disclosed that more than six attacks have been recorded along the corridor recently, describing the situation as an act of economic sabotage that threatens national infrastructure and government investment in rail transport.
Despite the security challenges, the NRC assured that train services remain operational with enhanced safety measures in place, and staff continue to ensure passengers reach their destinations safely.
The corporation also acknowledged ongoing collaboration with security agencies to secure rail corridors, protect passengers, and track down those responsible for the attacks.
It further appealed to communities along railway lines to assist by reporting suspicious activities and discouraging vandalism, warning that continued sabotage could disrupt rail services if urgent action is not taken.
The NRC reaffirmed its commitment to safe and efficient rail transportation nationwide.
