Panic has once again swept through the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ibogun campus, after armed hoodlums reportedly invaded student hostels for the second time in less than two weeks.
The attackers, said to be about seven in number, stormed the hostels occupied by students of the College of Engineering in the early hours of Friday, firing gunshots and threatening residents before carting away valuables, including mobile phones and a Lexus ES 350 belonging to one of the students.
According to student leaders, the gunmen operated for nearly two hours between 1am and 3am, leaving over 15 students traumatised by the violent raid.
President of the Nigerian Universities Engineering Students Association in OOU, Oluwafemi Aderupatan, confirmed the incident and blamed the recurring attacks on the absence of adequate security around the campus community.
He lamented that promises made by the police, school authorities and community leaders after the previous attack — including the establishment of a police post and improved security measures — had yet to materialise.
The students are now calling on Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, to urgently intervene and strengthen security in the area, warning that continued attacks have left many students living in fear.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that an investigation has commenced, assuring that efforts are underway to track down those behind the attacks.
