The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced Monday, May 18, 2026, as the first day of Zulhijja 1447AH.
The declaration was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Sultanate Council Sokoto and signed by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sambo Wali Junaidu.
According to the announcement, the new Islamic month marks the beginning of Zulhijja, the twelfth month of the Hijri calendar, a period of deep religious significance for Muslims worldwide.
Zulhijja is traditionally associated with the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah and the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir, observed through prayers, sacrifice, charity, and acts of devotion.
The Sultanate Council urged Muslims across Nigeria and beyond to embrace the sacred month with increased prayers, goodwill, and commitment to peace, unity, and national progress.
It also encouraged faithful to uphold Islamic teachings and continue to pray for stability and harmony in the country during the holy period.
