The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed that its Presidential, National Assembly, Governorship, and State Assembly primaries will proceed nationwide on May 29, 2026, despite disruptions caused by the Eid-el-Kabir public holidays.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the party’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, explained that transportation and logistical challenges linked to the festive period, including flight unavailability, affected the movement of aspirants and screening committee members.
According to the party, May 28 has now been designated for arrivals, documentation with INEC and security agencies, consultative meetings, and other preparatory activities ahead of the primaries.
The NDC also directed party teams deployed to various states to use the day for engagements with stakeholders, elders, and aspirants.
Senator Cleopas clarified that no state institution or security agency, including the Police, DSS, and INEC, is expected to participate in any activities scheduled for May 28, warning that any unauthorised action outside the approved guidelines would be considered illegal.
“The primaries are still scheduled to be held nationwide on May 29, 2026, in keeping with the original timetable,” the statement noted.
The party outlined the order of proceedings for the primaries to include presidential affirmation, National Assembly primaries or affirmations, State Assembly primaries or affirmations, and governorship primaries or affirmations.
The NDC further stated that all results from across the states must be collated and forwarded to the party’s national headquarters for official announcement by the National Working Committee.
The party leadership also appealed to members and aspirants to maintain peace and order during the exercise, stressing that violence, hooliganism, and disorderly conduct would not be tolerated.
