Nigerians are once again reeling in darkness following the collapse of the national power grid for the third in one week.
Numerous states reported complete outages following the system meltdown early on Saturday morning.
According to information gathered from the Nigerian System Operator’s website (niggrid.org), as of 8:16 a.m. today, the grid registered a historic 0 Megawatts (MW).
According to data, as of the time of this report, all 22 generation firms (GenCos) were down.
This week, there were two grid collapses, making it the seventh grid disruption of 2024.
Nigerians were unaware of the cause of this round of blackouts since the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had not yet confirmed the event at the time of this report.
Nigeria’s first blackout of 2024 occurred on February 4 at around 11:51 AM when the country’s grid failed. By midday, the TCN-managed grid’s capacity had dropped from 2,407 megawatts to barely 31MW, and by 1 PM, it had shut down entirely.
