The Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) across Nigeria installed 70,888 new meters in August 2025, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
This was contained in the Commission’s Metering Factsheet for July and August 2025, released on Monday.
According to the report, the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) recorded a marginal increase in the number of active electricity customers, rising from 11.89 million in July to 11.96 million in August 2025.
NERC stated that of the total active customers, 6.58 million were metered, representing a metering rate of 55.01%, a slight increase from 54.71% in July.
“These figures highlight the gradual progress in closing Nigeria’s metering gap and improving transparency and billing accuracy for electricity consumers,” the Commission said.
The top-performing DisCos, according to the Factsheet, include Ikeja Electric, with a metering rate of 84.83%; Eko Electricity Distribution Company, 84.25%; and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, 73.92%.
To further accelerate the metering process, NERC recently approved ₦28 billion for DisCos to procure and install meters for unmetered Band A and Band B customers within their franchise areas.
The Commission explained that the funds would be allocated in proportion to each DisCo’s contribution, with the goal of metering all outstanding Band A customers and expediting the closure of the metering gap for those in Band B.
NERC added that the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) was established due to the inability of some DisCos to secure adequate financing — through debt or equity — for the acquisition and deployment of end-use meters and other essential capital investments.
