A high-stakes Paraguayan league clash between Olimpia and Cerro Porteño was suspended after violent clashes broke out at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asunción, leaving several people injured and dozens detained.
The match, attended by about 40,000 fans, was halted just 29 minutes into play after unrest erupted in the stands occupied by Cerro Porteño supporters. Reports indicate that the violence began when powerful firecrackers were detonated inside the stadium, escalating tensions between fans and security personnel.
Eyewitness accounts described chaotic scenes as some supporters reportedly seized a police riot shield, while security forces responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, forcing spectators onto the pitch as smoke filled parts of the stadium.
Authorities confirmed that at least six police officers were injured, one critically, with reports of head injuries, lacerations, and possible stab wounds. Around 100 individuals were also arrested as security forces moved to restore order.
The Paraguayan Football Association has rules stipulating that a team may forfeit a match if its supporters cause suspension, setting the stage for disciplinary action as both clubs trade blame over stadium security responsibility.
The incident has once again raised concerns about fan violence and stadium safety in South American football.
