Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has forwarded the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as the state’s new deputy governor.
Garo, who is also the son-in-law of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, was nominated to fill the vacancy created following the resignation of Aminu Gwarzo on March 27, 2026.
Gwarzo’s resignation came amid rising political tensions within the state government, after the House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against him over allegations including gross misconduct, abuse of office, breach of public trust, and financial impropriety.
In a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf said the nomination was made in accordance with constitutional provisions.
According to the statement, Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) empowers a governor to nominate a deputy governor where a vacancy exists.
The governor further explained that the decision followed wide consultations with key stakeholders across the state and urged the Assembly to expedite the screening and confirmation process.
If confirmed, Garo will assume the role of deputy governor in one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states.
