The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has written to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, urging the Supreme Court of Nigeria to expedite judgment in its pending appeal.
Through its counsel, Shuaibu Aruwa, the party warned that delays in delivering judgment could negatively impact its ability to participate effectively in the 2027 general elections.
The legal dispute centers on a leadership tussle involving a faction led by David Mark and another claimant, Nafiu Bala-Gombe, alongside other respondents.
ADC also raised concerns over actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has de-recognised the party’s leadership pending the resolution of the dispute, creating uncertainty about its political standing.
The Supreme Court had earlier reserved judgment after hearing arguments from both parties, with a date yet to be communicated.
The urgency of the matter is heightened by the May 30 deadline stipulated in the Electoral Act 2026 for political parties to submit candidates for the upcoming elections.
The case follows earlier rulings by lower courts, including the Court of Appeal Nigeria, which dismissed an appeal by David Mark and ordered that the matter return to the trial court for expedited hearing while maintaining the status quo.
With internal tensions escalating, the ADC is seeking swift judicial clarity to resolve its leadership crisis ahead of the 2027 elections.
