The Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the state government to raise the minimum wage from N85,000 to N225,000.
Speaking during the International Workers’ Day celebration at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, the state NLC Chairperson, Funmilayo Sessi, said the proposed increase is necessary in light of rising inflation and the high cost of living in Lagos.
She acknowledged the current wage approved by Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu but noted that it is no longer sufficient to meet workers’ basic needs under current economic conditions.
Sessi highlighted the impact of inflation, which she said has driven up the cost of food and essential goods, leaving many workers struggling to cope.
She also raised concerns about insecurity and poverty, noting that issues such as kidnapping and displacement continue to affect workers’ welfare and productivity.
While calling on both federal and state governments to implement policies that improve living conditions and strengthen security, she commended Lagos State for ongoing infrastructure projects and worker-focused initiatives.
The event was attended by Deputy Governor Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, who represented the governor, alongside other government officials and labour leaders.
