Zamfara State has recorded a major milestone with the departure of its first Hajj flight from the newly constructed Gusau International Airport, as 415 intending pilgrims were airlifted directly to Saudi Arabia aboard Max Air flight NGL270.
According to a statement issued by Governor Dauda Lawal’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, the inaugural flight departed on Friday carrying 288 male and 127 female pilgrims for the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage.
Governor Lawal, who described the development as historic, said the successful takeoff marked the fulfillment of a key promise by his administration and highlighted the strategic importance of the airport project.
“I am happy today that our pilgrims will be flying directly from Gusau International Airport to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for this year’s pilgrimage,” the governor stated.
He recalled that construction of the airport began on June 18, 2024, despite skepticism from critics who doubted the project would become a reality.
Lawal noted that the new airport would significantly ease travel stress for pilgrims, who previously had to journey to Sokoto or Kano before boarding Hajj flights.
According to him, the direct flight arrangement now allows pilgrims to reach Saudi Arabia in less than four hours.
“This is a historic milestone and a fulfilment of our campaign promises. I am committed to doing even more for our dear state,” he added.
The governor also revealed that discussions were ongoing with airline operators to commence commercial flight operations from the airport in the near future.
He thanked the people of Zamfara for their support, prayers, and confidence in his administration, describing the achievement as “just the beginning.”
Lawal further wished the pilgrims a successful journey and Hajj exercise, urging them to pray for peace and progress in Zamfara State and Nigeria.
