The Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap aimed at ending persistent blackouts and building a 24-hour electricity market powered by private-sector investment, smart metering, and independent power generation.
Speaking during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing in Alausa, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, said the initiative is anchored on the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024 and targets between 95 and 100 per cent grid availability by 2030.
According to Ogunleye, the state has already commenced aggressive reforms through the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), which has begun licensing operators, strengthening consumer protection, and creating investor-friendly policies within the emerging electricity market.
The commissioner disclosed that Lagos plans to begin a 100 per cent metering initiative from July 2026, while an AI-powered monitoring system tagged the “Electric Eye of Lagos” is also being developed to improve real-time oversight of electricity supply and trading activities across the state.
He added that the government is expanding energy infrastructure through independent power projects, smart solar streetlights, renewable energy interventions in schools and healthcare centres, and the development of major transmission corridors to improve reliability and industrial growth.
