The Presidency has dismissed as false and misleading reports alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is planning constitutional amendments to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia Law in Northern states.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency described the viral report as fake, politically motivated, and aimed at creating tension ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the statement, the report — which allegedly cited anonymous sources — was part of efforts by “agents of destabilisation” to spread misinformation, incite public unrest, and overheat the political atmosphere.
The Presidency also denied claims that President Tinubu intends to forward a constitutional amendment proposal allegedly tagged “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly before the elections.
Onanuga stressed that constitutional amendments in Nigeria follow a strict legal and legislative process requiring broad approval from the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly, making arbitrary changes impossible.
He added that President Tinubu remains focused on economic reforms and governance priorities aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.
The Presidency further urged citizens to disregard fake and divisive reports, warning that misinformation and political propaganda may intensify as campaigns for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
