N’assembly to fast-track security, economic reforms in support of Tinubu — Akpabio

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, says the National Assembly will intensify support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in strengthening national security and advancing economic reforms aimed at repositioning Nigeria for growth and stability.

Akpabio stated this after leading principal officers of the Senate on a Sallah homage visit to President Tinubu at his Lagos residence.

According to the Senate President, the National Assembly is committed to working closely with the Presidency to improve security across the country, especially in vulnerable communities and soft targets such as schools, churches, and mosques.

“He can’t do it alone. The National Assembly will assist him to ensure that we improve in the area of security,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President acknowledged that while insecurity remains a concern, significant progress has been made in reducing large-scale insurgent activities and organised bomb attacks previously witnessed in parts of the country.

Akpabio also revealed that lawmakers are considering frameworks for the establishment of state police under a regulated national structure to strengthen community security and improve coordination nationwide.

According to him, the proposed system would include a national state police commission responsible for regulating recruitment, training, conduct, and promotions.

On the economy, Akpabio praised Tinubu’s reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and exchange rate harmonisation, describing them as bold steps that have repositioned Nigeria’s economy on the path of recovery and growth.

He further highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Lagos-Badagry-Sokoto road corridor as transformative initiatives capable of boosting agriculture, transportation, and economic development.

The Senate President also disclosed that the National Assembly is considering increasing statutory funding for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund from 0.5 percent to one percent of federation revenue allocation to strengthen police operations and infrastructure.

Akpabio reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to support policies and programmes that promote national development, peace, and long-term prosperity for Nigerians.
