Fears are high that a new strain of monkeypox, which was discovered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is now present in numerous surrounding countries, could spread two years after a global outbreak.
The mpox strain, known as the Clade Ib subclade, that has been raging in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since September is more deadly and more contagious than earlier strains and is transmitted from person to person.
As it did during the worldwide mpox outbreak in 2022, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced on Sunday that it was thinking of forming an expert committee to provide guidance on whether to declare an international emergency.
