The Federal Government and the Nigerian Labour Congress have established a 10-person Joint Committee to address the contentious issues surrounding the proposed 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs.
This decision followed a lengthy meeting between representatives from both the Federal Government and the Nigerian Labour Congress.
In a statement, the NLC announced that the committee will convene over the next two weeks.
It will be recalled that two weeks ago, the Nigerian Communications Commission approved a 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs for operators within the sector, following demands for a review due to operational challenges.

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA AND THE NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS (NLC) OVER THE PROPOSED 50% HIKE IN TELECOMMUNICATION TARIFF AT A MEETING HELD ON MONDAY, 3RD FEBRUARY, 2025
Following a meeting convened by the Federal Government of Nigeria on the proposed 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs, which the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) strongly opposed, citing its potential negative effects on Nigerian workers and the economy, and in light of a threat to stage a one-day nationwide protest, the following resolutions were reached:
- The parties agreed on the necessity of setting up a technical group to resolve the major concerns raised during the discussions. As a result, a 10-person joint committee was formed, comprising five (5) representatives from both the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
- The committee is expected to conclude its deliberations and submit its findings within two (2) weeks, starting from the 3rd of February, 2025.
Both parties have urged the Nigerian public to remain calm while the committee carries out its work.
Thank you.
