An airstrike allegedly carried out by the Nigerian Air Force has reportedly hit a weekly market in Jilli village along the Borno–Yobe border, leaving more than 30 people feared dead and several others injured.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening during peak trading hours at the busy Jilli Market, where eyewitnesses said multiple explosions disrupted commercial activity and caused widespread panic among traders and residents.
Some accounts suggest that fighter jets were targeting suspected insurgents believed to be in the area, but the strike reportedly landed on the crowded marketplace instead, resulting in significant civilian casualties. One witness claimed dozens of bodies were recovered, while others were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Security sources and local officials confirmed the incident, noting that Jilli village falls within the Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State. However, the exact casualty figure remains unverified as authorities continue assessments.
As of press time, the Nigerian Air Force has yet to release an official statement on the operation or its outcome.
