Manchester United moved a step closer to securing a return to the UEFA Champions League after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday.
Goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko in the first half gave United a commanding lead, before Brentford’s Mathias Jensen pulled one back late in the game to set up a tense finish.
Casemiro opened the scoring early, finishing from close range after a well-delivered corner routine involving Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire. The Brazilian midfielder’s recent scoring form continued as he netted his fourth goal in six matches, further highlighting his influence in midfield.
United doubled their advantage just before halftime when Fernandes led a quick attacking move, setting up Sesko, who calmly slotted home from inside the box to extend the lead.
Brentford created several chances throughout the game but were repeatedly denied by the United defence and goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who made key saves to preserve the lead.
Despite United’s dominance in the first half, Brentford pushed harder after the break and were eventually rewarded in the 87th minute when Jensen curled a fine strike into the net to reduce the deficit.
The visitors continued to press in stoppage time but were unable to find an equaliser as United held firm to secure all three points.
The result keeps United in a strong position in the Premier League top four race, with the team now needing just a few more points from their remaining fixtures to confirm Champions League qualification for next season.
Interim manager Michael Carrick, who took over earlier in the season, continues to strengthen his case for a permanent role after steadying the team’s campaign and guiding them back into contention for European football.
Attention now shifts to a crucial upcoming fixture against Liverpool, which could play a decisive role in determining final league standings.
