The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted cocaine and opioid consignments hidden in packages headed for the United Kingdom and Australia, while also carrying out large-scale destruction of cannabis farms across several states.
According to the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the seizures were made at a Lagos courier facility where officers uncovered 170 grams of cocaine concealed within clothing parcels destined for Australia. In another interception linked to the UK, authorities discovered a shipment containing controlled pharmaceuticals including tramadol capsules, pentazocine, and promethazine injections, all hidden inside cartons.
In Delta State, NDLEA operatives conducted multiple raids on cannabis farms. At Ejeonu village in Ukwuani LGA, they destroyed thousands of kilograms of skunk spread across large farmlands and arrested a suspect during a follow-up operation. A separate operation in Orogun, Ughelli North LGA, led to the destruction of additional cannabis farms, bringing the total destroyed in both Delta operations to about 65,000 kilograms, with more recoveries and arrests recorded.
Similar enforcement actions were carried out in other parts of the country. In Kaduna, officers seized hundreds of kilograms of cannabis and arrested a suspect linked to the trafficking. In the Federal Capital Territory, a businessman allegedly producing drug-laced baked goods was arrested, with cannabis and infused snacks recovered from his residence.
Further arrests and seizures were recorded in Ogun, Taraba, Oyo, Edo, and Kano States, including large quantities of opioids, skunk, and other controlled substances concealed in creative ways such as food items and everyday household products. The agency also intercepted ammunition hidden in food packaging along the Abuja-Kaduna highway.
Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA continued its nationwide drug awareness campaign in schools under its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised officers across various commands for sustained efforts in both drug supply reduction and public awareness campaigns.
