World number one Jannik Sinner delivered a commanding performance on Sunday, defeating Germany’s Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-2 to win the Madrid Open for the first time.
The Italian star secured a record fifth consecutive Masters 1000 title and extended his winning streak to 23 matches with a dominant display in the Spanish capital.
Sinner now joins an elite group in tennis history, with only legends Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic having previously achieved four consecutive Masters 1000 titles.
Speaking after the match, Sinner said he is focused on building his own legacy rather than comparing himself to the sport’s greats, adding that he plays to improve and succeed rather than chase records.
From the outset, Sinner took control of the final, breaking Zverev early and racing to a 3-0 lead before maintaining relentless pressure with powerful serving and precise baseline play. He closed out the first set in style with an ace.
In the second set, Sinner continued his dominance, breaking early again to seize control. Although Zverev showed brief resistance, the Italian remained unshakable, breaking once more before serving out the match convincingly.
Zverev, a two-time Madrid champion, struggled to find rhythm throughout the contest as Sinner’s consistency and aggression proved overwhelming.
With this victory, Sinner further cements his status as the standout player of the season, heading into Roland Garros in top form and firmly established as the man to beat.
